Gift Aid...

Supporting DIWC is possible through many different forms such as volunteering in classes and activities, filling a place on the management board, fundraising, supporting DIWC through professional or specialist advice or information and through financial donations.

DIWC is a charity and as such depends on funding from charitable trusts as well as donations from individuals, businesses and other organisations.

Gift Aid is a government scheme that enables tax-efficient donations from individual UK taxpayers to the charity of their choice. At no extra cost to the donor, charities can reclaim 28p for every donated £1, as long as the donation does not exceed the amount of tax the donor will pay in the fiscal year.

By choosing to make a donation to our work, you will be helping women with a wide range of needs access the services, classes, activities and support of the DIWC.

To highlight some of the work we do, here are some Case Studies. All names, and some circumstances, have been changed to protect the identities of the individuals.

‘Mrs Wong’ tells us that prior to joining the Centre, she had not spoken to any individual other than her husband and child, since arriving in the UK 12 years ago. Language and cultural barriers restricted her participation in society. She would have remained isolated but with the support of DIWC she undertook a number of short courses and confidence building workshops and she is now in full-time employment. Although this case study is disturbing, it is unfortunately a common experience for many of the service users arriving at DIWC.

‘Mrs Kaur’, who is over 80 years old, joined our over 50s group with the encouragement of her daughter. She recently told a member of staff, “I have really benefited from coming here. My health has really improved. When I wasn’t coming out I felt like a child, like I was dead. I cried alone a lot and got really depressed. Coming out (to DIWC) has really help me.”

‘Nasreen’s’ father would not allow her to socialise outside school as he did not feel it was culturally appropriate for a young woman to leave the home unsupervised by her family. She felt isolated and depressed by the lack of contact with the outside world. At times she felt overwhelmed by loneliness and had suicidal thoughts. DIWC Youth Workers met her parents at their home and after a lengthy discussion about the cultural sensitivities/concerns her parents and her community had, Nasreen was allowed to participate in DIWC’s youth group. Nasreen’s confidence in herself and her abilities grew from strength to strength through participating in the youth group’s varied programme of activities and the opportunities to speak to young women of her own age.
